Abstract
1,236,528. Chlorination process, WACKERCHEMIE G.m.b.H. 27 Aug., 1969 [18 Sept., 1968], No. 42727/69. Heading C2C. vic-Dichloroalkanes are prepared by reaction of a C 2-6 olefin with chlorine, or chlorine and oxygen, in a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a sulphoxide of formula R-SO-R, in which each R is a C 1-4 alkyl group, at 0-50‹ C. and at a pressure of 0-5 atmospheres gauge. The process may be operated continuously or discontinuously. The product is preferably fed to a distillation column and the distillation residue, containing sulphoxide, recycled. The chlorine can be used either as a gas or a liquid, and the chlorine and, if used, oxygen, are preferably fed in downstream from the olefin feed inlet. The chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent is preferably that produced in the chlorination reaction. Products specified are 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloropropane, 1,2-dichlorobutane and 2,3-dichlorobutane.
