Abstract

1,237,411. 1,2-Dichloroethane; trichloroethane. WACKER-CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 14 Nov., 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 54006/68. Heading C2C. 1,2-Dichloroethane is prepared by reacting ethylene with chlorine in dichloroethane as solvent in the presence of 0À4 to 4 grams of SnCl 4 per litre of reaction mixture at a temperature of 0-50‹ C. and a pressure of 0-5 atmospheres gauge, at least a part of the reaction product being conducted continuously to a distillation column where at least some of the 1,2- dichloroethane is distilled off, the distillation residue containing catalyst being recycled in such a manner that the reaction volume remains substantially constant. The chlorine may be added in gaseous or liquid form. A minor amount of trichloroethane which is formed during the reaction is recycled to the reactor as part of the distillation residue.
