Abstract
Trichloroethane-1,1,2 in mixts of chlorinated lower aliphatic derivs contg in partic. dichlorethane-1,2 is selectively dehydrochlorinated to give vinylidene chloride by treating the mixt by an alkaline soln contg chalk at is not >105 degrees C. Steam is fed to the bottom of the reactor, the alkaline soln at the top, and the mixt contg trichlorethane at the middle. The top part of the reactor is at 80-105 degrees C and the bottom part at 50-80 degrees C. The ratio of the volume of the alkaline soln in m3 and the supply of trichlorethane in tonnes/day is between 0.3 and 2. A fractionating column at the top of the reactor is used to separate the prods. The yield of vinylidene chloride is good and any impurities are easily removed.
