Abstract
"Process for the production of chlorinated hydrocarbons", especially tetrachloroethanes, or 1: 1: 2-trichloroethane or tetrachloroethanes and 1: 1: 2-trichloroethane in any desired proportion starting from chlorine, ethylene and 1: 2-dichloroethane, with minimum formation of other chlorinated ethane comprising balancing in a continuous system comprising a column filled with reaction, topped by a reflux condenser, characterized by comprising (1) introducing ethylene at the base of the column and introducing chlorine into said column at a point between the introduction of ethylene and the top of the column, in the absence of light; (2) if to pass through the column, in descending direction, a recycling liquid consisting of 1: 2-dichloroethane, only when 1: 1: 2-trichloroethane is desired, and a recycling liquid consisting of 1: 2-dichloroethane and 1: 1: 2-trichloroethane, when tetrachloroethanes or tetrachloroethanes and trichloroethane are desired; the entire 1: 2-dichloroethane of the products leaving the base of the column is recovered and subjected to further recirculation through the reaction column and, when the desired product is tetrachloroethanes or 1: 1: 2: trichloroethane and tetrachloroethanes, a part of the totality of said 1: 1: 2-trichloroethane is recovered from the products leaving the base of the column and recirculated through the reaction column; (3) maintaining the column at a temperature of at least 50º C but not higher than the boiling point of the liquid introduced at the top of the column; (4) inserting at the top of the additional 1: 2-dichloroethane column, from an origin outside the system, so that this body together with the liquid recirculated from the base of the reaction column provides a combined recirculating liquid containing at least 5 moles of 1: 2-dichloroethane; (5) using chlorine in the presence or absence of oxygen and using such molar proportions of chlorine to ethylene that there is a net loss of 1: 2-dichloroethane in the system that requires the addition of 1: 2-dichloroethane from an outside source to the system and under conditions such that 1 mole of 1: 1: 2-trichloroethane and/or tetrachloroethane is produced, for the total of 1 mole of ethylene and 1: 2-dichloroethane reacted; (6) removing through the condenser that crowns the reaction column, the hydrogen chloride formed by substitutive chlorination, and (7) recovering from the liquid that leaves the base of the reaction column and consists of 1: 2- dichloroethane, 1: 1: 2-trichloroethane and, optionally tetrachloroethanes, the part of chlorinated ethanes not recirculated in the reaction column and which is the product, and consists of 1: 1: 2-trichloroethane or tetrachloroethanes, or 1: 1: 2-trichloroethane and tetrachloroethanes in the desired ratio.
