Abstract

The oxychlorination of ethylene to ethylene dichloride and other chlorinated hydrocarbons by reaction with HCl and O2 in the presence of a supported copper chloride catalyst is conducted in a system of 2 or more reactors in series, the stoichiometric amount of O2 being fed to the first reactor, if only two reactors are present, or divided between all the reactors with the exclusion of the last, if more than two reactors are present, an excess of O2 being fed to the last reactor. Each reactor is jacketed and maintained at 220-320 DEG C. and contains a fixed bed consisting of a supported catalyst, the concentration of catalyst increasing in the direction of flow, which catalyst is copper chloride either mixed with a diluent so that the catalyst contains less than 35% by weight of cupric chloride or the cupric chloride is present in the catalyst in an amount as low as 1% by weight of the catalyst at the upstream end of the catalyst bed, subsequently increasing to 35% by weight of the catalyst.
