Abstract

Chlorinated hydrocarbons are prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon with elemental oxygen and with hydrogen chloride in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising cupric chloride and potassium chloride, the molar ratio of potassium chloride to cupric chloride being in the range 2.1 : 1 to 8: 1, the concentration of cupric chloride being between 10 and 150 grams per litre of catalyst bed. Specified hydrocarbons are benzene, benzene derivatives which are known to be chlorinatable, alkanes containing 1-7 carbon atoms and olefins containing 2-7 carbon atoms. In the Example, ethylene is converted to a product containing ethylene dichloride and minor amounts of other chlorohydrocarbons containing 2 carbon atoms.ALSO:A catalyst for the oxychlorination of hydrocarbons (see Division C2) comprises cupric chloride and potassium chloride, the molar ratio of potassium chloride to cupric chloride being in the range 2,1:1 to 8:1, the concentration of cupric chloride being between 10 and 150 grams per litre of catalyst bed.
