Abstract

1,190,942. Oxychlorination of hydrocarbons in presence of a copper exchanged zeolite. MARATHON OIL CO. 18 May, 1967 [8 June, 1966], No. 23233/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division Cl] Oxidative chlorination of hydrocarbons is effected by passing gaseous reactants comprising hydrocarbon, hydrogen chloride and oxygen at elevated temperature through a bed containing a catalyst consisting essentially of a zeolite conically bonded by ion-exchange to from 0À1-5% by weight of Cu and contacting the gaseous reactants with the catalyst for a time sufficient to enhance their reaction. Specified hydrocarbons are methane, ethane, propane, ethylene and propylene. In the oxychlorination of ethylene, at low temperatures, the principal product is 1 : 2 dichlorethane. At increased temperatures dehydrochlorination to vinyl chloride results. Thereafter vinyl chloride may compete with unchanged ethylene so that sequentially trichlorethane, dichlorethylene, tetrachlorethane, trichlorethylene, pentachlorethane, tetrachloethylene, are formed. Examples describe the oxychlorination of ethylene. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,138,889.
