Abstract
1,228,812 Vinyl chloride and ethylene KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 8 April, 1968 [11 April, 1967], No. 16761/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Vinyl chloride and ethylene are simultaneously produced by thermally cracking a hydrocarbon, e.g. a petroleum fraction, to give a gaseous mixture containing ethylene and acetylene in a ratio of 1-10:1, preferably 2-5:1, compressing the gaseous mixture to 10-30 atmospheres, removing and recovering aromatic compounds and higher acetylenes by cooling, condensation or absorption with a solvent, removing carbon dioxide if present, reacting the gaseous mixture with anhydrous hydrogen chloride under pressure, at a temperature of 130-200‹ C., and in the presence of a catalyst (HgCl 2 adsorbed on active carbon) to selectively convert the acetylene to vinyl chloride, re-compressing the gas, if required, and introducing it into a deep cooling type separating apparatus, first separating vinyl chloride and then separating and refining ethylene.
