Abstract
Methanol, particularly that used as an anti-freeze or solvent medium in the treatment of acetylene gas produced by the cracking of hydrocarbons, is purified of higher acetylenes and aromatic compounds by mixing with water and contacting said mixture, preferably atomized, with an inert gas in countercurrent flow. The water is generally not less than 50% by weight of the mixture and is used, before mixing, to wash the stripping gas leaving the methanol purification zone to recover methanol vapour therefrom. The inert stripping gas may be combustible or incombustible but must contain substantially no oxygen or gases very soluble in water or methanol; specified gases are nitrogen, carbon dioxide and the gaseous hydrocarbon which is to be cracked to form acetylene. In an embodiment impure methanol is passed counter current to an inert gas in a preliminary stripping zone, mixed with water and stripped in counter current by an inert gas in a second zone and then distilled to obtain pure methanol. In the Example the impure methanol was that employed to cool the product gases of the partial combustion of methane, the preliminary stripping gas was synthesis gas (e.g. CO + H2) and the second striping gas was that obtained after fractionating and washing the product gases to remove acetylene.ALSO:Methanol, particularly that used as an antifreeze or solvent medium in the treatment of acetylene gas produced by the cracking of hydrocarbons, is purified of higher acetylenes and aromatic compounds by mixing with water and contacting said mixture, preferably atomized, with an inert gas in countercurrent flow.
