Abstract

1,149,798. Vinyl chloride; ethylene dichloride. KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 29 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966], No. 54339/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] A mixture of acetylene and ethylene, obtained by cracking a hydrocarbon in steam at 1600- 2300‹ C. (see Division C5), followed by removal of carbonaceous and tarry substances and C 3 <SP>+</SP> hydrocarbons from the decomposition gas, is reacted with HCl (e.g. using mercuric chloride/ active carbon as catalyst) whereby acetylene is converted to vinyl chloride which is separated, the remaining mixture then being reacted with chlorine (e.g. in ethylene dichloride solution) whereby ethylene is converted to ethylene dichloride, the residual gas then being used as a fuel for heating steam for the cracking step. The ethylene dichloride is then pyrolysed to form further vinyl chloride and HCl which is recycled to react with further acetylene.
