Abstract

Chlorinated hydrocarbons having an olefinic linkage are prepared by heating a C 2 to C 4 saturated, chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon having at least 3 chlorine atoms in the molecule and having at least 1 chlorine atom on each of two adjacent carbon atoms at 200‹ to 500‹ C. in the presence of a supported catalyst comprising a compound of a metal capable of existing in two valency states in association with a compound of potassium, rubidium or caesium and in the presence of an acceptor for the liberated chlorine. Preferably the catalyst comprises the chlorides of copper and the chlorides of said alkali metals on activated alumina. Specified chlorine acceptors are hydrogen, acetylene, olefines, saturated hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons other than the chlorine-donating chlorinated hydrocarbon reactants.
