Abstract
1377238 Tetrachloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 26 Sept 1972 [27 Sept 1971 30 Sept 1971] 44508/72 Heading C2C Tetrachloroethylene is produced by contacting a starting material comprising CCl 4 with a molten salt catalyst comprising cuprous chloride and, optionally, (A) at least one chloride of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal; (B) at least one chloride of a second metal selected from Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr, Ni, Pd and rare earth metals or (C) a mixture of (A) and (B) at 430-650‹ C. The reverse reaction for converting a completely chlorinated saturated and/or unsaturated C 2-4 hydrocarbon to CCl 4 is effected by contacting said hydrocarbon with chlorine or HCl and oxygen with a molten salt catalyst comprising cupric chloride and optionally (A), (B) or (C) at 430-750‹ C. In each reaction the catalyst may comprise a mixture of cupric and cuprous chlorides. The preferred alkali metal chlorides are Li, Na and K chlorides and MgCl is the preferred alkaline earth metal chloride. The process for C 2 Cl 4 may be conducted with the feed additionally comprising a chlorinatable material such as methane, ethane, propane, butane, ethylene, propylene, butene, butadiene, benzene, toluene or xylene and oxygen. HCl and/or Cl 2 may also be present. In the CCl 4 process a temperature of 500-650‹ C. is preferred and the hydrocarbon feed may be C 2 Cl 4 , C 2 Cl 6 , C 3 Cl 8 , C 4 Cl 6 , C 4 Cl 8 , C 4 Cl 10 or a mixture thereof.
