Abstract

1461846 Production of highly chlorinated hydrocarbons SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 22 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 12948/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Highly chlorinated hydrocarbons having at least one C atom per molecule to which at least two Cl atoms are bonded are produced by contacting saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, partially chlorinated, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, or a mixture thereof, with oxygen and HCl and/or Cl 2 in the presence of an unsupported molten salt catalyst maintained at 250-650‹ C. and comprising (a) more than 95 mole per cent, but not more than 99À5 mole per cent, of a copper chloride optionally mixed with at least one alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chloride and (b) less than 5 mole per cent, but not less than 0À5 mole per cent, of at least one chloride of Pd and rare earth metals, the reaction conditions being chosen to achieve a conversion of #92 mol. per cent of the starting hydrocarbons to a product containing a major proportion of highly chlorinated hydrocarbons. The alkali metal chloride may be Li, Na or K and the alkaline earth metal chloride may be MgCl 2 . Suitable rare earth metals are La, Ce, Pr and Nd. The chlorine source is preferably contacted as 0À1-20 moles per mole of hydrocarbon feed material. The hydrocarbon feed may be methane, ethane, propane, butane, monochloromethane, dichloromethane, monochloroethane, 1,2 - dichloroethane, 1,1,2 - trichloroethane, 1,4-dichlorobutane, monochloroethylene, dichloroethylene.
