Abstract
1360570 Vinyl chloride; 1,2-dichloroethane LUMMUS CO 28 June 1972 [28 June 1971] 30290/72 Addition to 1213202 Heading C2C Vinyl chloride is produced by (a) contacting, in the vapour phase, ethane and chlorine and/or hydrogen chloride as fresh feed, and unconverted ethane, ethyl chloride, and ethylene as recycle components, with a molten mixture comprising a multivalent metal chloride in both its higher and lower valence states and the oxychloride of the metal, to produce a reaction effluent comprising vinyl chloride, dichloroethane and the said recycle components; (b) recovering from the reaction effluent the vinyl chloride, dichloroethane and recycle components; and (c) passing the recovered recycle components to step (a), the ethyl chloride being recycled in an amount to provide an ethyl chloride to fresh feed ethane weight ratio of from 0À3 : 1 to 14 : 1 and an ethylene to feed ethane weight ratio of from 0À03 : 1 to 1À2 : 1. The dichloroethane is either recovered as co-reaction product, or is recovered and dehydrochlorinated to vinyl chloride in a variety of ways, the hydrogen chloride released being recycled to the chlorination step (a). The multivalent metal is preferably copper. The melt may contain other metal chlorides which are non-volatile and oxygen-resistant so as to lower the melting point of alkali metal chlorides such as KCl and LiCl and heavy metal chlorides such as ZnCl 2 , AgCl and thallium chloride. The melt recovered from step (a) is contacted with molecular oxygen to produce the oxychloride, and the regenerated oxychloride containing melt is recycled to step (a).
