Abstract

A chlorinated hydrocarbon is produced by contacting (I) a starting material selected from (1) CCl4, (2) CCl4 and a chlorinatable material, (3) CCl4, a chlorinatable material and oxygen, (4) CCl4, a chlorinatable material, oxygen, and HCl and/or Cl2, and (5) a fully chlorinated 2-4C satd. and/or unsatd. hydrocarbon, oxygen and HCl or Cl2 at ca 430-650 degrees C (starting materials 1-4) or ca 430-750 degrees C (starting material 5) with (II) a molten salt catalyst consisting of (A) a copper chloride or (B) a mixt. of a copper chloride and at least one alkali (ne earth) metal chloride and/or >=1 Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr, Ni, Pd or rare earth metal chloride. The process is of use for the prodn. of tetrachloroethylene (starting materials 1-4) or CCl4 (starting material 5). It is carried out at relatively low temps. and reaction rates are high, yields are good, and excess Cl2 is not required.
