Abstract

1442117 Vinyl chloride production LUMMUS CO 28 Jan 1975 [30 Jan 1974] 3671/75 Heading C2C Vinyl chloride is produced by the dehydrochlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane by direct contact with a molten salt containing a multivalent metal chloride in its higher and lower valence state in the presence of ethane in a weight ratio of ethane to dichloroethane of 0À01-0À15 : 1. Suitable metals are Cu, Cr, Co, Fe and Mn but Cu is particularly preferred optionally with the oxychloride present also. The reaction is usually conducted at 700- 1200‹ F. in the presence of inhibitor for the dehydrochlorination of vinyl chloride, e.g. trichloroethylene. In an example a feed containing mainly 1,2-dichloroethane (78À3 mole per cent) trichloroethylene (11À1%) and ethane (9À4%) gives vinyl chloride with a selectivity of 90À4 mole per cent and dichloroethane conversion of 80 mole per cent.
