Abstract

Unsaturated chlorohydrocarbons are prepared by reacting an alkane of at least two carbon atoms, an oxygen-containing gas, and chlorine and/or hydrogen chloride as chlorinating agent in the presence of a metal halide catalyst at 470-550 DEG C., the utilisation of the chlorinating agent being maintained at 70-90% of the amount fed, and the amount of oxygen being 0,2-2,4 moles per mole of chlorinating agent. Suitable catalysts are chlorides of multivalent metals such as Cu, Fe and Cr, which may also be used together with other metal halides, such as alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides. Suitable catalyst carriers are silica, alumina, fuller's earth, kieselguhr, pumice, and diatomaceous earth. In examples, ethane produces mainly vinyl chloride, together with other chlorohydrocarbons, saturated and unsaturated.
