Abstract

Carboxylic acid bromides and chlorides are produced by reacting with CO + halogen carbocyclic aromatic compounds containing at least one unsubstituted position on the aromatic ring, at least part of the reagents being provided as carbonyl halide, the reaction being carried out in presence of a carbonyl or carbonyl halide forming metal or a compound thereof; Group VIII metals are preferred. Examples describe the production from benzene of benzoyl chloride, iso- and tere-phthalyl chlorides and unidentified triacid chlorides also being formed.
