1421596 Preparation of aromatic carboxylic acid chlorides TEIJIN Ltd 7 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11127/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for preparing aromatic carboxylic acid chlorides by reacting a homopolyester or copolyester, formed from an aromatic dibasic acid as the main acid component and a glycol component, with at least one (trichloromethyl)benzene having at least one -CCl 3 group and optionally at least one nuclear Cl atom in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from iron and aluminium and the oxides, sulphides and salts thereof, to produce (a) an acid chloride of said aromatic dibasic acid and (b) an acid chloride formed by conversion of all -CCl 3 groups in said (trichloromethyl)benzene to -COCl groups. Examples of the acids produced by the reaction are terephthaloyl chloride, isophthaloyl chloride and benzoyl chloride.
