Process for obtaining transparent polyamides by polycondensation in a manner known per se and under common conditions, of diamines and dicarboxylic acids, or of their halides, esters, nitriles or acid amides, characterized in that: A) m-xylylenediamine or mixtures of p-xylylenediamine and at least 50 mol%, and preferably at least 65 mol%, of m-xylylenediamine, and B) mixtures of at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid, containing from 7 to 20 c atoms, preferably from 8 to 14 c atoms, especially mononuclear dicarboxylic acid carrying carboxyl groups in the meta or para position, and at least one acid saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic containing from 5 to 20 c atoms, and preferably from 6 to 12 c atoms, the proportion of the aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and respectively the dicarboxylic acids being from 10 to 90 mol%, and preferably from 50 to 70 % molar, or mixtures of the corresponding dicarboxylic acid derivatives.
