Abstract

553,950. Halogenating olefines. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.]. Sept. 9, 1941, No. 11524. [Class 2 (iii)] Halogen substitution products of olefines (including diolefines) are produced by reacting the olefine with a halogen or hydrohalogen acid and oxygen in the presence of an oxidizing catalyst at 250-600‹C. Suitable catalysts, are metals, oxides or other metal compounds, preferably copper, iron and bismuth oxides or salts or metallic copper, other catalysts mentioned being zinc, barium, aluminium, rare earth, magnesium, silver, titanium, lead, cobalt and nickel oxides, molybdenum dioxide and magnesium sulphate. They may be employed on supports. Examples describe the reaction of ethylene with hydrogen chloride and oxygen and with chlorine and oxygen respectively, various proportions of vinyl chloride and chlorinated ethylenes being produced, together with small quantities of chlorinated ethanes. It is stated that brominated olefines are made similarly, and reference is made to the chlorination of propylene, butylenes and butadiene.
