Abstract

The trichloroethylene content of crude ethylene dichloride is reduced by treating said crude ethylene dichloride under substantially anhydrous conditions with Cl2 in the presence of a catalytic amount of FeCl3, and recovering purified ethylene dichloride containing less than 1.0 mole per cent trichloroethylene. The purified ethylene dichloride may be subsequently dehydrohalogenated to vinyl chloride. The trichloroethylene impurity is converted by the process of the invention to pentachloroethane from which the dichloroethane is readily separable by distillation.
