Abstract

The process described in the parent Specification for the continuous production of magnesium by means of silicon or ferrosilicon with the addition to the charge of one or more alkali or alkaline earth fluorides is now applied to a batch process, and both the continuous and batch processes may be carried out under either or both of the following conditions: (1) the proportion of fluoride in the reaction mixture may be about 2 per cent; (2) double fluorides such as cryolite, sodium silico-fluoride, or magnesium silico-fluoride may be used. The batch process, and also the continuous process when this is carried out under conditions (1) and (2), may be operated with a briquetted charge.
