Aluminium, obtaining. - A mixture of aluminium fluoride and sodium or potassium carbonate or hydrate is used instead of cryolite as a flux in the electrolytic reduction of alumina. The aluminium fluoride may be used dry or moist e.g. it may contain 30 per cent of water. A suitable mixture contains 4 molecular proportions of aluminium fluoride to 3 of sodium carbonate; the proportions may,. however, be varied.
