Abstract
Pure carbon for electrodes and double fluoride of sodium and aluminium for electrolytes are produced by treating granular coals yielding mainly silicious ashes with aqueous hydrofluoric acid preferably at about 70 DEG C. until the ash yield falls below 1 per cent, treating the resulting fluosilicic acid with common salt to produce a precipitate of sodium fluosilicate and a solution of hydrochloric acid, and heating the washed sodium fluosilicate with alumina to produce silica-free double fluoride of aluminium and sodium. The hydrochloric acid may be used to eliminate iron from coals used to make anodes for manufacturing silicon-aluminium alloys. The sodium fluosilicate may be heated with alumina in aqueous suspension or at 500 DEG C. dry to produce 2 AlF3.3NaF or at 500 DEG C. with added sodium carbonate to produce 2 AlF3. 6 NaF. The double flouride and silica may be separated by flotation or by the method of Specification 589,944. The treated coal is washed, dried, heated at 1300 DEG C. to expel gases and form a coke suitable for electrodes. Specification 270,703, [Class 50], also is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises p also the production of cryolite from sodium aluminate and sodium fluoride produced from sodium fluosilicate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
