Abstract

A gas mixture containing less than 1% HF is contacted at less than 650 DEG C. with activated alumina to remove HF as aluminium fluoride. The Al2O3 should have a surface area more than 150 m2/g, combined water content 0,1 to 0,2 mole per mole Al2O3, and water absorption less than 20 g. per 100 g. Al2O3 at 15 DEG -25 DEG C. under atmospheric conditions. The gas may flow in countercurrent to the Al2O3 at a rate less than 1500 v/v/hr., and the temperature may be 15 DEG C. or above. The gas treated may be gas containing heavy hydro carbons evolved in Soderberg anode cells for the preparation of Al by electrolysis of Al2O3 in cryolite, which gas has been burned with O2-containing gas in a chamber containing sintered Al2O3 at above 800 DEG C.
