Abstract
655,098. Electrolytic production of fluorine. HOWELL, W. N., HILL, H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 27, 1948, No. 25149. [Class 41] In the production of fluorine by electrolysis of substantially dry mixtures of fused fluorides e.g. of approximate composition KF.2HF, anode polarization is reduced by use of an anode of carbon of permeability not less than 5, preferably not less than 20, the permeability being expressed in terms of the number of cubic feet of air which can be passed per minute per square ft. of surface through one inch thickness of the carbon under an impressed pressure of two inches of water. In an example the electrolyte is of approximate initial composition KF.2HF containing less than 0.5 per cent of water. The temperature is initially 75 C. and is maintained between 75 and 90 C. The H.F. content is maintained between 40 and 42 per cent by periodic additions of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. The carbon anode is of permeability 37.5. A cell for carrying out the process comprises a container 1 and a lid 2 both of mild steel or other resistant material. The carbon anode 3 is supported by a conducting rod 6 insulated from the lid at 4. The cathode 5 which may be of mild steel or copper, is supported by a conducting rod 7 insulated from the lid. The anodic and cathodic gases are separated by a skirt 8 depending from the lid and are led off by exits 10, 11. Heating means, not shown, are provided. Specification 642,812 is referred to.
