Abstract

Raw materials containing alumina and iron compounds, such as bauxite, are dissolved in hydrofluoric acid, and alkali-aluminium fluoride is precipitated, and subsequently separated, from the solution by the addition of an alkali salt of which the acid radicle forms a soluble iron salt. Sodium chloride and sulphate are specified. When silica is present in the raw materials, sufficient hydrofluoric acid is used to form hydrofluosilicic acid, which is separated from the solution, prior to the precipitation of the double fluoride, as alkali silicofluoride by the addition of an alkali salt, such as sodium or potassium chloride.
