Abstract

555,241. Removing iron impurities from minerals. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd., and SHERLOCK. A. Nov. 7, 1941. No. 14384. [Classes 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] The iron impurities in felspar, fluorspar, alumina and particularly sand for use in making glass, are reduced by treatment in an aqueous bath containing titanous sulphate or chloride and a fluorine compound, e.g. hydrofluoric acid, sodium fluoride, sodium silico-fluordde. The mineral preferably after treatment is washed. A preliminary treatment with a titanous salt solution may be given before addition of a fluorine compound.
