Abstract

Cryolite or double salts of similar composition are obtained by reacting ammonium fluoride with alumina in the presence of aqueous caustic soda solution. The alumina may be first dissolved in the caustic soda and the solution be introduced into a solution of ammonium fluoride with stirring, or both solutions may be introduced at the same time into the reaction vessel. Technical aluminate solutions, with addition if necessary of caustic soda may be used in the process. Excess of alumina should be avoided. The heat of the reaction suffices to expel most of the ammonia liberated, and residual ammonia may be removed by heating to 80--90 DEG C. Ammonium fluoride for use in the process may be obtained by treating siliceous fluorspar with sulphuric acid, absorbing the liberated hydrofluoric acid in ammonia recovered from the process and filtering off the silicic acid precipitated.
