Abstract

Solutions of potassium and other alkali metal fluorides containing thionates, obtained for instance from potassium sulphide by the action thereon of a simple or complex hydrofluoric acid, are purified by treatment with acids or acid salts under conditions which prevent dissociation or which do not allow it to become active in aqueous solution. The added acid is not then bound by liberated alkali and the thionates are decomposed. In carrying out the process the fluorides, after an addition of hydrofluoric acid or acid fluoride equivalent to the thionates present, may be heated to temperatures of about 300 DEG C. After cooling the fluoride may be extracted with water to free it from precipitated sulphur. Alternatively sufficient hydrofluoric acid may be added to form the acid salt and provide some excess, whereby the thionates are decomposed directly. From the purified bifluoride after separation of precipitated sulphur hydrofluoric acid and pure alkali fluoride may be obtained by heating say to 400 DEG C.
