Abstract
Sodium sulphate is removed from solutions containing sodium sulphate and sulphuric acid, for example spinning baths used in the manufacture of artificial silk, by adding strong sulphuric acid to the said solutions until they contain at least 30 per cent thereof and crystallizing out the sodium sulphate in the form of a hydrated acid sulphate. The solutions may be subjected to preliminary concentration and may be mixed with strong sulphuric acid at one end of a cooled crystallizing apparatus, the acid sodium sulphate being separated from the liquid at the other end of the apparatus. According to an example a solution containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, glucose, and zinc sulphate is concentrated, treated with strong sulphuric acid and cooled to 15 DEG C. According to the Provisional Specification strong sulphuric acid should be added until the concentration thereof in the solution is more than 25 per cent. Specification 298,639, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], is referred to.
