Abstract

Voluminous silicic acid is made by introducing a solution of an alkali silicate, e.g. sodium silicate, into a solution of an alkali metal salt in order to precipitate alkali silicate from solution, liberating the silicic acid from its salt by reaction with an acid, and filtering, washing and drying the precipitated silicic acid. Alkali metal salts specified are the chlorides, nitrates and mixtures thereof; and while any acid may be used, it is preferable to use such acids as will form with the alkali metal of the silicate the same salt as is used for precipitating the silicate, and at the same time to use a salt of the same alkali metal as that of the silicate, so that the filtrate resulting from filtration of the silicic acid may be recycled in the process. A pure product may be obtained by using at least the theoretical amount of acid required to decompose the total amount of alkali silicate originally present in solution.
