554,153. Sodium aluminium fluoride. SIEGEL, W. Nov. 18, 1941, No. 14798/42. Divided out of 554,126. [Class 1 (iii)] In the production of sodium aluminium fluoride from hydrofluoric acid containing silicon compounds, a non-alkaline potassium salt (other than potassium fluoride), e.g. potassium chloride or sulphate is added to the raw acid (consisting of a mixture of hydrofluoric and hydrofluosilicic acids), potassium silicofluoride is separated and decanted and to the acid mixture containing mainly hydroflouric acid and the acid of the potassium salt are added sodium and aluminium compounds, e.g. aluminium hydrate and sodium fluoride or chloride. The potassium silicofluoride may be treated according to the process of Specification 263,623, [Class 1 (iii)], or 554,126 to give sodium fluoride and potassium carbonate. The amount of potassium salt added in the first step of the process is roughly equivalent to the amount of hydrofluorsilicic acid present in the solution. The addition of the sodium compound is made. while the reacting mixture is hot or it is heated after the addition to facilitate the precipitation of the sodium aluminium fluoride.
