Abstract
In the production of anhydrous magnesium chloride, mechanically strong shaped pieces or lumps containing oxidic magnesium compounds are prepared by mixing a pulverous material, e.g., magnesia with or without magnesite or megnesium oxychloride, containing at least 20 per cent. of hydraulically setting magnesia, with sufficient water relatively free from magnesium cholride to form a paste which can be formed into pieces of suitable size, the hardened pieces while still retaining substantially all of the added water being then chlorinated in the presence of a reducing agent, which may be incorporated with the magnesium compounds or be fed separately into the chlorination furnace, e.g., as carbon monoxide. Chlorination includes the use of a gas containing chlorine or a suitable chlorine compound. Carbon, peat, sawdust, and salts such as sodium and potassium chlorides may also be included in the mix prior to chlorination. Specifications 259,498, 310,365, 333,741, [all in Class 1 (iii)], 480,698, 548,800 and 582,333 are referred to.
