Abstract
527,124. Magnesium. ALLOY PROCESSES, Ltd. (Armandias, L. S.). April 1, 1939, Nos. 10190 and 18932. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82 (i)] Magnesium is obtained by heating a mixture, which may be briquetted, of the magnesiumbearing material and a metallic reducing agent first to a temperature below the reduction temperature and thereafter, when it has been heated through, to the reduction temperature. The reducing agent may be aluminium or calcium, or their alloys. The magnesium may be distilled and condensed under reduced pressure which may be 0.5-10 mm. of mercury. If the original material is a carbonate such as magnesite or dolomite, the elimination of the carbon dioxide may be effected in the first stage. The two temperature ranges may be 600-700‹C. and about 1250‹C. respectively. The process may be carried out in plant comprising a series of interconnected gas-heated furnaces wherein heating gases which have heated a chamber to reduction temperature are utilized for the preliminary heating of another chamber, and the residual heat of the reduced charge is used to preheat air for the heating of other charges; or the plant may comprise electric heating means having two circuits arranged to heat the charges to the two required temperatures.
