Abstract

In a modification of the process described in the parent Specification, the starting material consists of lead ores occurring naturally in lump or granulated form, or of agglomerated lead ores not subsequently consolidated by heating, or of mixtures thereof, and a portion of the exhaust gases from the hearth, in conjunction with fresh blast air, is blown into the charge through the hearth tuyeres, and another portion is diverted either to the chimney stack or for the utilization of its content of sulphur dioxide. The flue dust removed from the current of exhaust gas withdrawn from circulation may be added to fresh ore. Dust may be removed wholly or partially from the gases which are returned to the tuyeres. The gases may be cooled prior to being returned. In place of the exhaust gases, other gases of similar composition, such as poor roasting-furnace gases, may be supplied to the hearth.
