Abstract

Material containing zinc sulphide, e.g. burnt pyrites, flotation blende, is chloridized for the volatilization of the zinc as chloride and sulphate by treatment up to 600-700 DEG C. with gases containing chloride or hydrogen chloride and above 50 per cent. advantageously 70 per cent. or more, of oxygen by volume. Sulphur trioxide and dioxide may also be present. The operation may be effected in preferably muffled, rotary, shaft, or fluidized layer type furnaces, or shelf kilns. A roasted residue suitable for iron blast furnace treatment may be obtained.
