Abstract
494,386. Magnesium. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd. Feb. 8, 1938, No. 3955. Convention date, April 5, 1937. [Class 82 (i)] A mixture for use in the thermal production of magnesium from dolomite or magnesite is made by forming a pulverulent mixture of burnt dolomite, or burnt magnesite and quicklime, with silicon (ferrosilicon) or aluminium serving as reducing agent, suitably shaping the mixture, and heating it in hydrogen &c. to 850-1200‹ C. in the case where silicon is used as the reducing agent, or to 700-1050‹ C. in the case of aluminium, until a hardening of the mixture has taken place. Shaped pieces of the mixture may be introduced at i into a rotating iron tube a supplied with hydrogen &c. at h and heated by resistances b supplied with current at c. After e.g. 5-30 minutes the pieces so hardened fall into a container d fitted with valves e, f. Large pieces may be hardened and subsequently broken by a roller crusher. Fluorides may be added to the mixture as described in Specifications 465,097 and 487,836.
