Abstract

499,968. Casting composite articles. BIRD, F. G. Aug. 3,1937, No. 21422. [Class 83 (i)] A composite ferrous article is made by pouring iron into a shell of the desired exterior alloy of such thickness that it will, without distortion, exert pressure on the iron, this being of such a nature that it will withstand all the stresses due to cooling and use and also combine with the inner face of the shell. Iron containing 3 to 4 per cent of carbon at 1400‹ C. is quickly poured into a cleaned and heated stainless-steel cylindrical shell, backed by sand, asbestos, &c. in such a way that it rotates therein. The iron must contract more slowly than the shell during cooling and may contain 0À6 per cent of combined carbon, 2À9 of free carbon, 3À0 of silicon, 0À6 of manganese, 0À08 of phosphorus, and 0À05 of sulphur.
