Abstract
A refractory material is prepared by grinding a mass containing a high percentage of silica with 25-35 per cent of water without any other binding agents until a sticky paste is formed which, on heating to a temperature of 1000-1500 DEG C. is converted into a mass capable of withstanding a temperature of 1800 DEG C. The material is ground in a mill with quartzite balls, the resulting plastic mass is allowed to stand for a period of at least one month, and is then pressed to shape or rammed into place. Up to 50 per cent of less finely-ground silica may be included to reduce shrinkage. A coating of graphite to render the material resistant to slag erosion may be applied. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of ground used silica bricks to counteract shrinkage, the application of the process to magnesia and chromite, and the use of a neutral or acid binding-agent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
