Abstract

To compensate for shrinkage of a "porcelain" artificial tooth &c. on firing, the mould in which it is formed is made of Kyanite and Sillimanite in predetermined proportions so that it can be permanently expanded to the required extent by heat. Kyanite increases 20 per cent in volume, becoming Sillimanite, when heated to 1350 DEG C. and mixtures with Sillimanite expand to a proportionally smaller extent. Kaolin, bentonite, sodium silicate, silicon ester, plaster of Paris, phosphates, &c. may be used for bonding, and casting may be done while the mould is still hot, e.g. at 800 DEG C. The mould may be made by pressing about a pattern or by the "lost wax" process and may be used for casting under pressure.
