Abstract
Refractory moulds for casting metals are formed from an aqueous mixture containing sand, a water-soluble compound of silica, e.g. sodium silicate, as binding agent, and a substance which precipitates a silicon compound from an aqueous solution of the binding agent, and are expanded before use in casting by heating to a temperature at which quartz present in the sand is converted to tridymite. The addition of the precipitating substance, which may be a metal or metalloid oxide or oxyhydrate, e.g. calcium oxide, allows the conversion of quartz to tridymite and the expansion of the mould (which is necessary in order to compensate for the shrinkage of the metal subsequently cast therein) to proceed at a lower temperature, i.e. 900 C. instead of 1200-1300 C. The expansion may be reduced, if required, by replacing some of the sand by a substance which will not expand during the heating, e.g. burnt clay.
