Abstract

Magnesium oxide is ground with a small proportion of silica, shaped, and vitrified at a temperature below the fusing point of magnesia. Suitable proportions are 95 per cent of magnesia to 5 per cent of silica, and the firing temperature is preferably 1400-1600 DEG C. More silica reduces the refractory properties, and less increases the firing temperature. To reduce shrinkage, the magnesium oxide may be mixed with a portion of the silica, say 2 per cent, fired, ground with the remainder of the silica, shaped, p and again fired.
