Abstract
1350428 Transparent MgO-Al 2 O 3 spinel COORS PORCELAIN CO 22 July 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 34465/71 Heading ClA A sintered body comprises 98% MgO-Al 2 O 3 spinel and has a transparency of at least 50% per millimetre in visible light of 0À4-0À8Á wavelength and of at least 60% per millimetre in infra-red radiation of 3À5Á wavelength. The body is manufactured by mixing MgO and Al 2 O 3 with 0À2-5% wt. LiF, the Al 2 O 3 having a particle size <À5Á, calcining the mixture at 800-1100‹ C., cold pressing the calcined material to a compact having a density of at least 2 glcc and firing the compact to sintering temperature. The magnesium oxide may be precalcined at 500‹ C. for 1-4 hrs. The mixture may be dry ball milled and formed into a compact prior to calcining. After calcining the mixture may be first crushed then about 2-5% organic lubricant, e.g. chicken fat or cottonseed oil, may be added and the mixture ball milled until the mean particle size is <0À5Á. The firing may be carried out by first heating in air to 1000-1300‹ C. for 1-5 hrs. then firing in a wet reducing atmosphere of, e.g. wet hydrogen having a dew point of 30-60‹ F., to 1600- 1900‹ C., suitably by heating at 100‹ C./hr. to 1800‹ C. and maintaining the temperature for 24 hrs.
