Abstract

Powdered a -Al2O3 containing 0.06 to 1% MgO is prepared by heating a mixture of Al2(SO4)3 and a magnesium salt decomposable to MgO to a temperature up to 1100 DEG C., e.g. 950-1100 DEG C., to drive off volatile components and form powdered g -Al2O3, and further heating to up to 1700 DEG C., e.g. 1200-13- DEG C., to convert g -Al2O3 to a -Al2O3. Commercial mono-clinic Al2(SO4)3.#cH2O (#c is 12-18) may be used, and the magnesium salt may be sulphate, nitrate or carbonate. The mixture of a -Al2O3 and MgO may be formed into translucent alumina ware by crushing to - 18 mesh B.S.S. and pressing at 5 to 50 tons/sq. inch to give a compact of density not less than 35% that of a single alumina crystal. This compact is fired in air at 800-1200 DEG C. for e.g. 1 hour, machined to shape, and fired at 1700-1950 DEG C. in H2 or vacuo to remove air pores.
