Abstract

1,133,371. Magnesia spinel. ALUMINIUM LABORATORIES Ltd. 31 March, 1966 [12 Nov., 1965], No. 14394/66. Addition to 1,038,573. Heading C1A. MgO.Al 2 O 3 is prepared by calcining at 850- 1000‹ C. a homogeneous mixture of alumina hydrate, lightly calcined alumina, or alphaalumina, at least 40% of which has a particle size less than 10Á, and magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate, basic magnesium carbonate, or lightly calcined magnesium oxide, at least 90% of which has a particle size less than 10Á, together with 0À2-4% of a fluorinecontaining material, except when α-alumina is used. The Mg compound is preferably present in excess, which is subsequently removed by leaching with dil. HC1. The fluorine containing material may be AlF 3 , HF, F 2 , NH 4 F, or CaF 2 . The mixture may be pressed, e.g. at 4000 p.s.i. The product may be reground to 92% less than 10Á (size distribution specified) and pressed and fired to give a body of density above 3.45 g./c.c.
