Abstract

1387608 Alumina ceramics; sodium aluminate GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 17 Aug 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 38480/72 Headings C1A and ClJ Sodium aluminate is made by; (a) reacting at least 99À99% pure metallic aluminium with an aqueous solution of NaOH; (b) removing insoluble material; (c) precipitating the sodium aluminate by decreasing the amount of water, (d) separating the precipitate from the aqueous phase, (e) washing the sodium aluminate with an organic solvent, preferably ethanol, and (f) drying and calcining the aluminate to obtain particulate sodium aluminate which is free of excess Na 2 O or α-Al 2 O 3 and is free of NaOH 1 H 2 O or SiO 2 . The sodium aluminate may be mixed with α-alumina and sintered, e.g. at 1600- 1900‹ C., to produce sodium #-alumina ceramic bodies. MgO and Y 2 O 3 may be incorporated prior to sintering to give 1-5% and 0À25-5% respectively on the ceramic body. The ceramic bodies may be used as solid electrolytes.
