Abstract

A porous sintered aluminous substance contains alumina or alumina with at least one other refractory oxide, for example thoria, beryllia, silica or zirconia in proportion not more than 50% by weight based on the alumina, and has total pore volume greater than 20 cm.3 per 100 grm., the pores having diameters of from 0.1 micron to 5 microns. A gel of hydrated alumina or a mixed gel is mechanically dried by suction, filter - pressing, centrifuging or wringing; washed; subjected to either a crushing, molaxation, kneading or rolling treatment or a thermal treatment at a temperature not exceeding 110 DEG C.; and sintered at a temperature of 1500 DEG C. to 1800 DEG C. The gel starting material is obtained by precipitation at a pH between 7.5 and 11 from an aqueous solution of an alkali metal aluminate or an aluminium salt.ALSO:A sintered aluminous substance contains alumina with at least one other refractory oxide, for example silica, thoria, zirconia, beryllia, and has total pore volume greater than 20 cm3 per 100 gm of the substance, and pores with diameters in the range from 0.1 microns to 5 microns inclusive. The substance may contain not more than 50% by weight based on the weight of the alumina of the other refractory, oxide(s). A mixed hydrogel is mechanically dried, washed, then subjected either to another mechanical treatment or to drying at a temperature not exceeding 110 DEG C., and sintered at a temperature in the range 1500 DEG C. to 1800 DEG C. Examples 7 and 8 relate to silica-alumina
