Abstract
An extrudable paste which may be fired to form a ceramic article comprises oxides or other bodies consisting of hard abrasive grains, and hydrargillite, a native Al(OH)3, having a large active surface area. The constituents are pasted with water. The hard oxide may be thoria, zirconia, silica or magnesia alone or mixed together and/or with alumina. In examples the hard oxide is alumina, comparative examples employ naphthalene or an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, glycerine, and polypropylene glycol as extrusion aids instead of hydrargillite. The hydrargillite is preferably of active surface > 80 sq. m. per gm. Porous ceramic articles are obtained by including a pore-forming material such as naphthalene in the paste.
